Red Eyes After Lash Appointments

Red Eyes After Lash Appointments

Lash extensions have become a popular beauty trend due to its low-maintenance, yet fashionable everyday look. However, red eyes during, or after lash applications can be a possible issue that can scare us away from lash extensions. It's important for both clients and lash technicians to understand the causes of red eyes, and how to resolve the concerns that follow.

Common Causes of Red Eye with Lash Extensions

1. Improper Taping of Bottom Lashes

Irritation to the eyes can occur from an incorrect application of tape under the bottom lashes. The tape can be applied too tightly, leading to redness. Lash technicians must maintain a gentle, hypoallergenic tape and avoid pulling or tugging on the skin when applying the tape

2. Adhesive Fumes

The fumes from lash adhesives can irritate the eyes. Lash technicians must use products that reduce the fumes from adhesive. It also helps to verify that the space allows for proper ventilation. As a client, it helps to communicate discomfort to your lash techs.

3. Opening Eyes During Application

Lash technicians should disclose the importance of keeping the eyes closed to their clients throughout the lash application process. Opening eyes exposes them to adhesive and other potential irritants.

4. Wearing Contact Lenses

It is recommended to remove contacts before lash applications, as it can reduce the risk of irritation and the eyes will be in a relaxed state. Wearing contact can increase sensitivity in the eye.

5. Allergic Reactions

Some clients may have heightened sensitivity, or allergies that are linked into the ingredients of products used during lash applications. Like cyanoacrylate, this is the main bonding agent that gives the glue its adhesive properties.

Recognizing Abnormal Reactions

Persistent Redness

Redness during lash applications, or shortly afterward is normal most of the time. If redness persists after 24 hours, it may be a more serious issue and it's crucial to contact a doctor.

Pain During Showering

Experiencing pain or discomfort while showering after a lash extension application could indicate an issue that needs evaluation by a medical professional.

Seeking Medical Advice

If any abnormal symptoms persist, consulting a physician is crucial as proper diagnosis and recommended treatments can be advised.

Soothing Aftercare

It's important to keep a good aftercare regimen to make sure your lashes stay well taken care of. Use a water based lash shampoo, to keep your lash extensions clean and deter any infections. It helps to use a lash cleanser brush alongside the shampoo.
